The Winter Garden -part 1-

To falling leaves, persistent rain and gray skies we anticipate the arrival of winter. Nature begins to quiet down, and as in all walks of life, rest is essential for efficient subsequent activity.
During some months, with the arrival of the cold, it will be convenient to prepare the various species to withstand temperatures as low as possible and that in turn will build up the reserves that will be an explosion of spring color.
The frequent rains characterize the period therefore one of the first steps to take will be the reduction and spacing of the risks, as doing so on the frozen ground is very harmful. Fall brings about changes: deciduous trees lose their foliage, which may be used for organic fertilizer only after a good disinfection because it usually contains eggs and larvae of insects that are a threat and require a proper prevention to avoid problems later.
We can also burn them, but in any case what is necessary is to do a thorough cleaning of the garden, raking consciousness, while we clean pruning to remove spent flowers, twigs, etc. Before the onset of the cold weather we protect our plants, covering the base with straw or earth simply piled with burlap bags or plastic sheeting especially those we know are of tropical origin.
If the soil is more or less dry we dig the earth and contribution. Likewise if the rains are abundant, we should avoid excessive moisture can cause root rot: the night dew is sufficient.
At this time no task is essential, but we can take care to check the status of our working tools and, if time permits, remove the top layer of garden soil to aerate the soil and prevent crusts forming .
